in 1996 serotonin label heads selway and szostek went to moscow to perform at the invitation of &#1055,&#1058,&#1070,&#1063, magazine. synapse performed at the -waterclub- and met the legendary dj compass vrubell. they went to his -studio- where he had perfected the art of making entire tracks out patterns on the yamaha dx-5. szostek brought a dat of these jams back to nyc and schmer-003 dj rx-5 -a taste for crap- was released as a small run white label in 97. the run sold out and disappeared to be forgotten forever... until 2016 szostek casually mentions its existence to techno uber-nerd nina kraviz who just had to have it for her -fabric 91- cd. so dj rx-5 was back from the ash heap of history and schmer got a new release from him on schmer07. then schmer got the word out far and wide that they d like a remix ep for two of the originals: compass provided stems because like a miracle he still had the patterns after 20 years. heeding the call were pointsman, tripmastaz, steve stoll and schmer s own bpmf. so this is what you get: -a taste for remix-. it will leave your lips wanting more, for sure!

long time friends cesar merveille and ryan crosson return to visionquest to reignite their ‘merveille & crosson’ project in late may with three fresh, intricately programmed cuts. visionquest boss ryan crosson and parisian cesar merveille need no introductions, with the duo’s back catalogues featuring material on the likes of revered imprints cadenza, desolat, little helpers and mdrnty. 2011 welcomed the introduction of their ‘merveille & crosson’ project, with their debut album ‘drm’ on visionquest gaining plaudits from industry heavyweights including ricardo villalobos, and after a five years absence here we see the duo return once again to deliver ‘dream state’, a three track ep that oozes quality from the off. the a side is home to title cut ‘dream state’, a production that tumbles and twists smoothly around meandering synths, crisp percussion shots and a bumping low ends, typical of the duos free flowing and evolving production styles. on the flip, ‘guns’ sets to work through pitched down vocal loops, sweeping sonics and rich textures all reinforced by a driving bassline that carries plenty of groove, before ‘time contraints’ slowly unveils itself with a series of off-kilter gliches and pops, delicate pads and sophisticated sound arrangement, concluding yet another fluent and immersive offering from merveille & crosson, and an excellent addition to the visionquest catalogue.

german producer christian burkhardt teams up with fellow countrymen chris wood & meat for a three-track release on jamie jones hottrax this may. burkhardt has been flying the flag for minimalist electronic music for a decade now, releasing on labels such as cocoon, oslo and pressure traxx. likewise, freebase records founders meat + chris wood have been purveying deep and minimal cuts individually since the ‘00s, joining forces in 2009 before releasing on labels like desolat, housewax and tiefschwarz souvenir. between the three of them theyve continually garnered support from the upper echelons of house and techno, making regular appearances in the sets of names like ricardo villalobos, sven väth, seth troxler and jamie jones. intricate percussion and a compelling bassline make up the foundation of closer 2 u as an echoing vocal and tense strings operate throughout. meanwhile, plain is a more downtempo cut in comparison with its dusky atmospherics and distorted spoken word samples that subtly permeate throughout the mix. on the flip, trumpad is deep and dubby whilst integrating trippy synths and mesmerizing effects for a rhythmic conclusion.

luciano continue his newly launched basaec imprint with * saved & slaved*, a two-track release featuring collaboration with argenis brito. swiss-chilean producer and dj luciano has been at the forefront of underground electronic music for quite some time now, heading up the infamous cadenza imprint and releasing material for some of the industry’s leading labels such as perlon, desolat, cocoon and poker flat amongst many others. here we see luciano back on his recently launched basaec label, delivering some of his signature stripped-back, dynamic and emotive material ‘lost in lymbo’ takes the lead and sees luciano offer up a typically intricate twelve-minute excursion with subtly modulating and evolving percussion, spiralling synth swells, sporadic vocal chants and a smoothly unfolding aesthetic resulting in an archetypal and intriguing production from this forever forward-thinking artist. the latter half sees luciano paired with fellow cadenza artist argenis for ‘pato’s track’, stripping back the vibe to a raw cowbell and rim shot percussive-led state whilst lumpy subs, vocal murmurs and subtly unfolding flute like melodies ebb and flow throughout the composition.
